Story
Chartering the Lambda Gamma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® was the idea of two dedicated and energetic ladies, Louis Butts and Lois Hurdle. These ladies unrelentingly contacted sorority members in the Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, Virginia area and on January 18, 1976, the Alpha Kappa Alpha Interest Group of Virginia Beach became a reality.
Miriam B. Williams was the president of the interest group and from January through June of 1976, each member worked enthusiastically and persistently to launch the interest group into a new and progressive chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®. The enthusiasm and perseverance was not in vain, for on June 5, 1976, Lambda Gamma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® was officially chartered by Mid-Atlantic Regional Director, Janet Jones Ballard.
Lambda Gamma Omega has served the citizens of Virginia Beach and the surrounding Tidewater area through various community service projects, workshops, tutorial programs, health screenings, food drives, coat drives, book drives, and by providing academic scholarships.
Lambda Gamma Omega members come from all walks of life: Corporate America, Health Professionals, Educators, Lawyers, Accountants, Homemakers, Mothers, Wives and Singles - all dedicated to the service of Alpha Kappa Alpha. Our members give their time, talent and treasures, to fulfill the purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®.
